Your Autumn Winter Update

To celebrate the new season, we’ve created an easy, practical guide to wearing three of the top new trends - angelic, sheeny skin, a rainbow of red lip colours and grunge-glam black eyes.

Moonlit Skin

Skin embraced an ethereal sheeny finish – as seen at Issey Miyake, Giambattista Valli and Blugirl – and we’re hailing it as the ‘moonlit’ complexion. Skin is squeaky-clean and healthy-looking; like you’ve just had a facial.

‘Go for shell, opal and soft pink highlighters and mix colours together for a multi-tonal effect’ L’Oréal Paris make-up artist Val Garland

Start by massaging a lightweight serum into skin to make it look hydrated, nourished and plump.

Apply a lightweight base to give skin a hint of coverage and colour, while letting your natural skin show through and conceal any flaws. When it comes to applying highlighter (you want it to look like you have shafts of light on your face), focus on blending it over the upper planes of the face – the cheek and brow bones. Any textures goes but creams are good for dry skin, powders for oily and oil-free for problematic.

To create the sharp lines of highlighter as seen at Issey Miyake, use a business or credit card as a guide. Enhance your sophisticated skin with a soft pink lip and a few coats of brown mascara.

‘Shimmer applied to the chin, bridge of the nose and forehead may work for models, but it could look like you’ve just been to a spinning class. Keep it on your cheek and brow bones only’ Maybelline New York make-up artist Sharon Dowsett.

Problematic skin tones should go for a matte foundation to avoid highlighting any flaws and keep sheen on spot-free zones only.

Red Alert Lips

Any shade goes this season, just as long as its red – from tomato to deep shades of red wine and rich ox-blood. When it comes to the finish, go for vinyl shine or velvety matte and nothing in between.

Lip liner is back in a big way and there are two options; match it either to your natural lip tone or your lipstick.

You need to spend time perfecting your skin as this palette of intense reds can highlight flaws. Apply a light layer of foundation and conceal where necessary, not forgetting any redness around your nose. Lip liner is key as it helps create intense colour and a precise shape. Take it just outside your natural lip line for fuller lips and blend it over your entire mouth before layering your chosen colour on top. According to the pro’s backstage, there is one way to find your perfect red and that’s trying them on. Complete your look with brushed-up brows and a few coats of black mascara on top and bottom lashes, as seen at Stella McCartney.

‘Team your statement lips with plumped-up, well-cushioned skin. Massage in a radiance-boosting serum before applying your foundation’ Sharon Dowsett, Maybelline New York’s make-up artist.

For PVC shine, add a layer of clear gloss or Vaseline on top of your lip colour. For a velvet matte finish, add a light layer of loose translucent face powder.

Tough Black Eyes

Eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara were used in excess to create smouldering grunge-glam eyes. If there’s one thing you need in your make-up bag this season; it’s a jet black eyeliner.

Keep a fan brush handy to flick any black shadow that drops down onto your skin.

Do your foundation last to prevent any black falling and making your skin looking muddy. Prep eyelids with a little foundation to give the shadow something to grip onto. Using a blending eyeshadow brush, blend a black powder shadow over your entire lid, starting at the inner corner and blending out. Using a clean brush, blend and diffuse the colour out into a winged shape.

You can increase the intensity by blending a cream shadow over the top. Take a black kohl or liquid eyeliner and apply it along the upper and lower lash lines, as well as in the lower waterline. Finish with several coats of glossy black mascara. Balance the black with fresh, dewy skin.

TIP: Match your eyes with your nails. The black manicure at Moschino Cheap & Chic was given a new season twist with hot pink on the thumb and index finger – try it now.

‘For the ‘worn in’ greasy finish as seen at Just Cavalli, apply clear lip gloss or Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream over the top of the eyeshadow’ Sharon Doswett.
