Maybe it's the change in the weather but even those skin care favourites aren't so enticing right now. Either they feel a bit heavy, or look a bit shiny becuase, like our wardrobe, our beauty essentials need a seasonal overhaul. Here are my spring skin favourites...
Forget cleanse, tone and moisturise, for me the real skin must-haves are polish, deep clean and hydrate. To get that buffed skin I prefer a non-grainy skin polisher (if you do like a scrub, go for the finest grained possible – they leave skin smoother) like those based on fruit acids (look for AHAs, glycolic or lactic acid in particular). As the go-to dermatologist for many sleek New Yorkers, Dr Dennis Gross does great at-home skin peels that work fast and are so easy to use (try his DG Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Peel ). A new discovery is the Glamglow mud mask – already a Red Carpet favourite, it gives any skin (except the super sensitive) that ultra clean, velvety finish. And finally, my ultimate skin saver is anything that hydrates, and the star ingredient to look for is hyaluronic acid (as found in Institut Esthederm Intensif Hyaluronic Concentrated Serum ). Like a super sponge, it saturates a parched skin with moisture (think of the difference between a prune and a plum…).
Talking of having a sort out, when was the last time you cleaned out your make-up bag, throwing out those old clogged mascaras and caked powders? Let alone washed your make-up brushes? I’m ashamed to admit I had one loved blusher brush that lasted nine years without ever being washed.

1 Fill in patches and fill out wispy brows with Prevage’s excellent Lash and Brow Enhancing Serum – keep using it daily and you will see a difference, the same goes for ensuring thicker, longer lashes.
2 The new thicker brow has to look groomed, first trim any longer hairs by brushing the brow up and trimming off ends that show above the top edge of the brow then fix with Tweezerman Brow Mousse .
3 Use a pencil or powder to enhance but work backwards from the end of the brow inwards to get a natural finish. Focus on defining the top edge of the brow, not the bottom to lift and open the eyes, not drag them down.
Some beauty products go beyond the call of duty making a difference that we can see fast, which is why I love Elemis’ new Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm .
Use it under make-up to get that smoother, prettier skin, or I sleep in it any time I need my skin to look good the next day (it's a great pre-party, pre-reunion, pre-anything skin treat). If you want to try one I have five to give away, for details of how to enter see below.
Surely I wasn’t the only one shocked to discover that popular anti-ageing procedures like Botox and fillers are unregulated in the UK – I even hear of a vet in the Midlands who regularly treats (human) clients.
So how do we know whether we are getting a safe treatment with a trained practitioner? Well, we don’t unless we do our homework and ask the right questions. For those contemplating a little facial ‘refreshment’, I have compiled my list of key Do's and Don'ts, the result of having Botox myself plus having researched and written about this topic for over 15 years.
Decleor BB Cream is a lovely blend of a golden glow and light but super-hydrating cream. It’s a summer skin essential.
Up-date your nails with one of the new hot pinks from Guerlain – from coral to fuchsia to raspberry, mix and match them for fingers and toes.
Benefit’s new Cream and Powder eye shadows are gorgeous – plus the sheeny honey shade RSVP makes the perfect cheek highlighter.
