This is my New Year’s Resolution-free zone because all we do each January is set ourselves up to fail miserably. So forget all those sweeping changes (no chocolate, no alcohol, no life) and follow my advice by embracing some easy, simple and do-able tweaks because by making lots of small steps we can still achieve our healthier, fitter, slimmer goal.
Do One Small Thing…
Everyday try to do one thing for the good (an extra glass of water, a healthy protein breakfast, walking up the stairs rather than taking the lift) and do it as early in the day as possible. That way, no matter what bad then comes along (a slice of cake, a glass of wine, a DVD rather than the gym) you can stop that negative voice in your head by reminding yourself of the one good thing you did.
We may not have an hour but we can spare one minute to do something that will make us look and feel better. Body brushing is boring but it works, however, rather than doing the whole toe to chin routine start off by blitzing the bits that you hate (I’m guessing that’s anywhere between the knees and waist).Pre- or post-bath (or even in the bath), on dry skin, damp skin or even with a product to save time (Elemis Cellutox oil
and Aromatherapy Associates Revive gel
are my favourites), it doesn’t matter just do it! Remember the longer the strokes the better and always work upwards to get the lymph moving so the flesh is firmer, less puffy and visibly smoother – do it daily and I promise an improvement in two weeks.
Tip: In the two minutes it takes to clean your teeth do bottom-firming squats. I was given this top tip by a top leg model and she swore by doing daily wide legged squats but on your toes, with heels raised – it works the most muscles.
Beauty School Basics
To turn a dull and pasty skin into something radiant and glowing, start to clean it properly. I don’t mind what you use (wash off, balm or milk cleanser) just use it correctly. Massage it in using small circular movements (working upwards and outwards is good for anti-ageing) and really working into the nooks and crannies around the nose and chin, then remove and do the same again. This double cleanse ensures skin’s super clean, plus the mini massage gets the skin-plumping circulation going. Try Caudalie Gentle Cleanser
or Guerlain Secret De Purete Cleansing Milk
Here are some easy diet swaps that we can stick to…
Swap Fruit juicing… for vegetable juices. Fruit juice gives you high sugar with no natural fibre so either eat the fruit whole or make yourself some tasty vegetable based juices (avocado makes them super creamy).
Swap Sugar-rich fruits like mangoes and bananas… for apples, pears and berries (and remember, the darker the berry the better as they are richer in anti-ageing anti-oxidants).
Swap One cup of tea or coffee a day… for a green, or even better, white tea. Packed full of anti-ageing anti-oxidants, it’s great for skin and body.
Need To Know:
The healthy minded may love a morning glass of warm water and lemon but dentists report that while good for the stomach it’s terrible for the teeth. Long term the acid from the lemons damages the teeth enamel, so either switch to plain warm water to get the digestion going, or have a green tea.
FYI… Forget trying to drink two litres of water daily (this rule is decades old and based on two litres of fluid from drinks and food), and instead try this to up your water intake. Start with just a half litre bottle to sip throughout the day, then every two or three days up the quantity a little – within a few weeks you will happily drinking enough to keep you healthy and hydrated.
